      Citation: "Flight Lieutenant Hutcheson went to England in 1940 and joined 258 Squadron. He saw much active service with his squadron, participating in many convoy patrols and numerous sweeps over France, where he succeeded in probably destroying one enemy aircraft. In August 1941 he was posted as flight commander to 488 Squadron [RNZAF], Singapore, and was in action on numerous occasions prior to the evacuation of Singapore. During this period he destroyed one enemy aircraft and damaged others. At all times he showed excellent leadership and keenness to contact and destroy the enemy. He was himself shot down twice and each time skillfully crash-landed his aircraft. In Java, after this officer had led a formation of nine fighters to Palembang and landed there, the aerodrome was attacked by numerous enemy fighters accompanied by paratroop carriers. Although nearly out of petrol, and unable to refuel, he immediately took off and against very heavy odds attacked the paratroop carriers, shooting into them until he was shot down by enemy fighters. He showed a complete disregard for danger, afterwards crash-landing his machine and making his way back to Batavia." AWMM
