  • Son of Tiki Mahupuku Kopu and Otihi Kopu, of Bell Block, Taranaki. Source; Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

    Joined the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy on a 12-year engagement in January 1939 as an Assistant Steward. Was first posted to ACHILLES but came off her as she departed for overseas deployment in the South Atlantic so missed the River Plate battle. Would serve at PHILOMEL until he was discharged PUNS 4 November 1941 suffering from tuberculosis and was admitted to Auckland Hospital where he died in March 1942 and was returned home to be buried. It is thought he was aged 22 at the time of his death. AWMM
