  • Son of George Bayntun Starky and Georgina Dunsford Starky.

    He began his first tour of 1941-1942 flying Wellingtons in the UK and then later in the Middle East. One the night of the 5/6 September 1943, Squadron Leader Starky on a detailed attack Mannheim. When the bomber was badly hit and sustained damage, Squadron Leader Starky succeeded in regaining control of the plane, Flying Officer Beer plotted the path home and Squadron Leader Stakry battled his way over enemy territory, he reached an airfield on the coast and made a safe landing. (Hanson, p. 456) He was awarded a Distinguished Service Order for his efforts.

    Part of the RNZAF Victory Contingent in London. Joined the Royal Air Force in 1947, Jim became the Chief Test Pilot for Armstrong Siddeley after the War. AWMM
