During the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb tests RNZAF Bristol Freighters were used to fly through the atomic cloud to take dust samples. The air force workshop had to make these filters that were then fitted to the Freighter wing tips. – I asked Dad if this was to provide clean cabin air for the crew – “oh no, these were just to collect dust samples for analysis, the cabin air was just supplied as normal!” The whole project was Top Secret so when completed the filters were ceremonially locked in the CO's office cupboard. Later it was discovered a mistake had been made so he asked the CO’s PA if he could have the filters back to fix them. “Oh NO, that’s all secret, we can’t take them out of the cupboard”. So Dad had to go and collect tools, and a torch, and then get locked in the cupboard to make the adjustment. He reckoned he had many a good laugh thinking about that one.
