"For Meritorious service. One of the more senior unit, this officer has, in two tours of duty, set a fine example by his devotion to duty and sound morale, both in the air and on the ground. He has done 234 operational hours and taken part in 74 missions, and on his second tour as flight leader, he led his section in a most capable manner. • Flight Lieutenant Hoskin completed three tours of duty in the Pacific, the last one on Corsairs. Member of 'Caterpillar' and 'Goldfish' clubs. On 24 Feburary 1944 baled out of a Kittyhawk near Green Island due to the loss of fuel. Rescued two hours later by a USN patrol boat, he returned to Torokina by USN MTB, participating in a night action against Feni Island en-route. (Hanson, p. 261)

On application to the Caterpillar Club in July 1944, Hoskin wrote the circumstances under which he had to bale out; (1) Parachute Pilot Type No.A 12519, (2) Aircraft flown at a time - P40N Warhawk, (3) Solomans Islands area, South West Pacific, (4) Time and Date - 1015 hours on 24th March 1944. We were acting as fighter cover on a dive bombing strike against Rabaul, New Britain, when, on the return journey my engine stopped and I have to bale out into the sea, where I remained afloat in my dinghy until picked up two hours later." (Goldfish Club). AWMM
