  • In April 1945 on a maritime patrol around Funafuti Island, the crew of a No.5 Squadron (Catalina) took off during a heavy swell and immediately sank, Warrant Officer Mason was able to release his harness and make his way to the surface with the aid of his Mae West. Three of the crew died and seven were injured. (Hanson, p. 326). AWMM
