    B340148 Rex William Harris First introduction to the NZ Army was during his Compulsory Military Training in the 7th Intake and following an 18month stint in the Territorial Force enlisted in the Regular Force in 1959 and posted on Active Service to Malaya with 2NZ Regt or better known as the Aitken Battalion and later with 1NZ Regt and 1RNZIR with the Gurr Battalion “The Originals” of 1963-65 again to Malaya and Borneo . Various postings followed as Rex was promoted through the ranks serving in various appointments and as Regimental Sergeant Major with 3Bn, 7 Battalion, 2/1 RNZIR and 1RNZIR in Singapore and was also appointed to the most Senior NCO Appointment of an Infantry Soldier as the SMA , the Sergeant Major of the NZ Army. Rex was later Commissioned and served as the Adjutant of Papakura Military Camp. Rex retired from the NZ Army with the rank of Captain in 1985. Rex is a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire as the first medal on his rack denotes. AWMM

    HARRIS, Rex William. B340148 MBE, RNZIR, NZSAS (Malaya, Borneo) Passed away peacefully on Friday August 11th 2023, aged 87. Dearly loved husband to Kiri. A much loved father and father in law to Grant (dec), Tania and Danny, and Gregg. A loved Grandfather of Joshua, Keenan, Carlo, Savannah and Sebastian.
