  • Son of Robina Turnbull and Wilfred Gatonby Stead.

"Wing Commander Stead completed a short service commission with the RAF in the early 1930s. He then engaged in civil flying until 1940 and flew the first London-Stockholm service for British Continental Airways before the airline was amalgamated with British Airways in 1936. He flew high ranking officers of the RAF to France as passengers after the outbreak of war and rejoined the Service in April 1940. Posted to Sunderland flying-boats, he was stationed in the Shetlands, Iceland, the Mediterranean and West Africa. While on loan to the RNZAF he served as CO Lauthala Bay, Mar-May 1043 and 6 Squadron (Catalina), May-Oct 1943. He then returned to the RAF before becoming Senior BOAC Captain in 1945." Hanson, p. 567. AWMM
