    From Arthur Henry White's daughter:
"Dad had enlisted for the navy but in the meantime was called up by the army and did ambulance service training in Northland until such time as he was accepted by the navy.

Dad did three month training on the HMS Tamaki training ship. He was then on the Philomel. From there he went to the Phyllis (T22) which was delivering supplies to Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island and to a light house off Coromandel. The Phyllis was a danlayer (did minesweeping) of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN He also spent time on the Drake .

Dad was sent to England aboard the "Themistocles" which was loaded up in Melbourne and Freemantle and broke down in Durban, South Africa. He then changed ships to the “New Amsterdam” and eventually got to port at Gourock (next to Grennock), Scotland.

He did a gunnery course at Plymouth. He finally got drafted and was “packed like a sardine” as he expressed it, on the cruiser "Berick" with other sailors and shipped across the Mediteranean to Bezerta in Tunisia. Here he picked up his new ship LST358 (Victory II), a landing tank carrier. The ship moved tanks around but also transported troops and vehicles around the Mediteranean.

The ship was mainly based at Torranto in Italy but also visited Athens (Port of Pyreus) and went up to Salonika and on one ocassion Malta. They called at Italian ports of Bari and Brindisi. The ship had a refit in Castleamaine near Naples. They also went from Leghorn and over to Bastia in Corsica and then from Leghorn to Marseilles and Port de Buch and visited Ischia (an Island).

When the ship was in port Dad had watch duty where he was armed with a revolver and guarded the off ramp. Eventually he got tired of doing this and got a transfer to quartermaster.

He had helmsman duties steering the ship when at sea. The ship also moved troops around as well as tanks. One day the ship had problems when a Yugoslav driver got a vehicle stuck on the exit ramp and they were unable to get back to port at Bari, as they were supposed to - Bari was heavily bombed that night.

Dad came home on the aircraft carrier HMS Athling." AWMM
