"Hugh Lewis b.1886 the fourth child of ten born to Edward (youngest son of Henry Lewis, surveyor) & Caroline Lewis (nee Paine) when they lived in East Takaka; Moved to the Wairoa Gorge and then to a property in Hope, known as Echodale; he went to sea as an engineer. During WWI he crewed on the Kildonan Castle was requisitioned as an auxillary cruiser ; married a girl named Ulga Urbanovitch in the UK in 1917

Hugh Lewis however was part of the crew on the Kildonan Castle that was requisitioned as an Auxillary Cruiser by the RN. He had the rank of Engineer Sub Lt and the log book entry of the ship reads as follows:

The logbook entry for 24th Nov 1918 notes the following: “3.00p.m.Eng Sub Lieut. Lewis discharged to Seamans Hospital , RA Docks”; died on 4th December 1918 as a consequence of the flu epidemic and is buried in the East London Cemetery, Plaistow.” Peter Millward Research. AWMM
