    STRATFORD EVENING POST, VOLUME XXXIX, ISSUE 76, 4 AUGUST 1923

    "A very old colonist, and a veteran of the Maori Wars, passed away at the Auckland Hospital on Monday, in the person of Major John Thompson Large. Major Large was born in Surrey, England in September 1845 an dwas mentioned in dispated for conspicuous service, later receiving the Maori War medal. Major Large was a fine Maori linguist, and for 20 years from 1874 was engaged first as Government interpreter to the Native Lands Purchase Department, on the East Coast, and afterwards as a licensed interpreter in private practice, generaly in the same district. In the year 1880 he purchaged the Wairoa Guadrian newspaper in Hawke's Bay, and was editor and proprietor of that journal until 1892. Major Large had lived in retirement in Auckland for a number of years, and had taken a great interest in the veterans and in the work of the Auckland Insitute." AWMM
