    • Robert Hattaway was born in Headcorn, a small village in Kent, England on 29 March 1826, the third child of twelve children of William Hadaway and Mary Busain. Robert attended Headcorn village church school and a boarding school in Maidstone. He enlisted with H.M 58th Regiment in Chatham which sailed for Botany Bay in N.S.W, Australia taking prisoners from England. He was stationed at Paramatta. At the time, across the Tasman, the British colony of New Zealand after signing the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, were experiencing unrest. The northern iwi-tribes could see breaches in the treaty and began a protest when Lieutenant-Governor Hobson on 11.3.1845 decided to move the Capital from prosperous Kororareka-Russell township in the Bay of Islands to Auckland. There was a call for reinforcements from N.S.W, orders were sent for two companies of the 58th Regiment to sail for New Zealand. The troops embarked onto the H.M’s North Star, a twenty-eight-gun frigate that departed Sydney harbour 11.3.1845 on a fourteen-day voyage to Auckland. It was also the day of the Ngapuhi assault and ransacking of Kororareka-Russell, in the Bay of Islands. When the H.M North Star arrived, the troops of the 58th Regiment, the first to arrive in the colony disembarked at Mechanics Bay on the Waitemata harbour, 25.3.1845. It was a significant day for Robert Hattaway, being four days before his 19th birthday (he never returned to England.) They sailed to the Bay of Islands in May 1845 and set off from the Kerikeri River and began a tedious march toward Okaihau Pa where the Maori warriors, inside, were completely protected by palisades. After the battle on 8.5.1845, the warriors moved to Ohaeawai Pa, the strongest pa the British troops ever had to contend against. It was perfectly constructed for defence against musketry and ordinary guns. Colonel Despard assumed command of the whole force amounting to over 500 men. It was June 1845 and a very wet winter. The journey through rain and mud to Ohaeawai Pa was challenging. They set up camp nearby and had a miserable time; hungry, drenched and cold with lack of food, provisions and resources. This circumstance did not change for the better throughout this campaign, a disastrous time with errors of judgement made, causing the deaths and wounding of many soldiers. After the storming of Ohaeawai Pa on 1.7.1845, the troops recovered at Waimate Mission station for three months. Robert received a promotion of rank due to vacancies caused by the loss of sergeants after the July storming of Ohaeawai Pa. The troops returned to Kororareka, after moving to Kawakawa in November when receiving news that the Maori warriors moved into the a dense forest at Ruapekapeka Pa. Colonel Wynyard assumed the command, with the force increased in numbers and no shortage of provisions, they set up camp near Ruapekapeka Pa. The conflict with the Maori warriors continued through December 1845 to January 1846 where peace reigned, in the northern part of the province. During the troop's departure back to the coast Robert Hattaway badly injured his foot which required medical attention in Auckland. After the Northern War he reached the rank of colour-sergeant. In July 1851 he married Maria O’Leary and served at Wahapu, in addition to his military duties, acted as clerk to the Court house at Kororareka (Russell) and assisted with the account books for captains of whaling and sealing ships. Robert and Maria’s first child, Robert, was born in 1852. (Robert’s birth would be the first of 17). He took his discharge in 1856 and moved to Howick as a storekeeper under the Military Settlement Regulations. In 1860 he was again on active service in Taranaki and received a lieutenant’s commission. In 1863 he was gazetted Captain. After serving in the Waikato and Wairoa South war he took retirement in 1866; farming sheep, planting fruit orchards, gardens and wheat. Robert Hattaway, died 21.12.1904 aged 78 years.
