"Flight Lieutenant Carruthers joined the RNZAF in December 1950 having previously served eighteen months with the Royal Air Force. He has held a variety of administrative posts in New Zealand and has served overseas as Adjutant/Accountant Officerwith No. 41 Squadron since August 1968. Flt Lt. Carruthers' whole service has been characterised by loyalty and dedication of a very high order. He has consistently applied himself to his tasks with resolution and with disregard for personal interests and has as a result built up an enviable record in his Branch. Nowhere have Flt Lt Carruthers' outstanding qualities been more evident than during his service in the Far East with No. 41 Squadron. Over this period his wife has suffered a long and very serious illness resulting in major surgery. Burdened with a personal problem of this magnitude Flt Lt Curruthers may well have been excused for giving something less than maximum attention to his job. This has not however, been the case. Despite his intense concern for his wife's welfare, Flt Lt Curruthers has sacrificed his personal interests and has worked much longer hours than could have reasonably been expected of any officer. By personal example, he has evoked the maximum effort from an overworked and undermanned accounts flight and in his dealings with the personnel of the Squadron, officers and airmen alike he has attained a level of understanding quite exceptional proportions. The men exhibit the utmost confidence in his capacity to give sympathetic hearing, pertinent advice and prompt action. Their confidence is indeed well founded and Flt Lt Carruthers' contribution to the general welfare and morale of the Squadrons as a whole has in consequence been extremely valuable. This officer's display of fortitude and dedication to duty under the most trying circumstances is in the very best traditions of the RNZAF." By Such Deeds, p. 117 AWMM
