      "After completing thirty operational sorties [with 51 Squadron] Sergeant Phillips was posted to No 22 Operational Training Unit on the 7th May 1941, since he was completed 245 hours flying of which 125 have been at night. On the night of the 12th September 1941, when on a cross country flight, the pilot of the aircraft collapsed. Sergeant Phillips, an Observer, took charge of the controls and flew the machine back to base, a journey requiring 1 1/2 hours flying. This airman's work has been extremely loyal and devoted at all times." By Such Deeds, p. 394 AWMM
