  • William Appleyard joined the 70th Regiment in 1845. He was stationed in Ireland in the latter half of the 1840's during 'The Troubles' before the regiment moved to India where he saw service during the Indian Rebellion and witnessed the execution of 36 mutineers by means of blowing from a cannon. He saw service in the Waikato Campaign from 1861 onwards, under Gen. Cameron. In 1866, he was discharged after 21 years of service to the regiment. He died on the 26th of February, 1910 at the age of 82 years. He was buried at Te Henui Cemetery. AWMM
