  • Posted to minesweeper HMNZS MATAI and served in the Solomons with the 25th Minesweeping Flotilla. According to his card, he was on the minesweeper HMNZS MOA when she was sunk by Japanese aircraft in Tulagi on 7 April 1943 and it records him as injured. He is returned to New Zealand. He was then given antisubmarine training in Petone and is posted to the HDML 1192 October 1943. These patrolled out of PHILOMEL and Wellington. In March 1944 he was then sent to HMNZS COOK II [as it was briefly known before being renamed HMNZS KAHU]. This was the shore establishment located in the Russell Islands in the Solomons. This was the base from where the two Fairmile Flotillas operated from until June 1945. His card notes that he was admitted to a naval hospital in August 1944. He was discharged in October 1944 and was then posted back to PHILOMEL. AWMM
