    • Sidney Claud Saward was sent to serve in No. 6 Squadron at Halavo Seaplane Base, Havalo Bay on the island of Nggela Sule (Florida Island) in the Solomon Islands. There he was a crew member on Catalina Flying Boats.

His Catalina crashed on 27/1/45 at 1058hrs “10 miles south of Mbenga Island” Fiji (now called Beqa Island).

After the war he transferred to RNZAF Reserve of Officers Class C on 2/1/1946. 650 aircrew productive flying hours. AWMM
    • Before flying a just-rebuilt Catalina back from Fiji his crew took it on a required test flight there on Saturday 20 Jan 1945 (also aboard were some servicemen who had done some of its repairs). A catastrophic accident happened and it plunged a mile into the sea. Sidney and 5 other survivors were pulled off a single life raft about 24 hours later by a passing trading ship. The other 12 that had been aboard the Catalina didn't survive. Injured, he was soon back in NZ.
