'For general good work in repairing telephone lines under shell fire between 6th and 13th August, 1916, at POZIERES, and between 27th and 28th August, 1916, near MOUQUET FARM. He never failed to carry out his work no matter how furious the enemy shell fire, and many times escaped being blown up.' Second description reads: 'During the Battalion's tour of duty from 24th January, 1917, to 9th February, 1917, in the GUEUDECOURT Sector, this N.C.O. displayed great courage and devotion to duty. He was always at hand and with his assistants continually patrolled the telephone lines and kept up the telephone communications with the front line under most difficult circumstances. Many improvements were carried out in the Battalions telephone system, a system of laddering was laid down which showed a marked improvement on the previous system. This was carried out and supervised almost entirely by Corporal GOODWIN, who ran great personal risk from enemy's artillery and machine gun fire.' - 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 62- 19/04/1917 AWMM
