    Appointed Corporal, 22 August 1916; promoted Sergeant, 20 February 1917.
    Admitted to 8th Australian Field Ambulance, 7 April 1917 (influenza); transferred to 56th Casualty Clearing Station, 11 April 1917; to Ambulance Train, 12 April 1917, and admitted to 1st General Hospital, Etretat, 13 April 1917 (trench fever); transferred to No 4 Convalescent Depot, Havre, 22 April 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 14 May 1917.
    Wounded in action (second occasion), Belgium, 2 July 1917 (shrapnel wound, right thigh), and admitted to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 55th General Hospital, Boulogne, 3 July 1917; to No 7 Convalescent Depot, 8 July 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field in Belgium, 14 August 1917.
    On leave, 19 September 1917; rejoined Bn (date not recorded).
    Wounded in action (third occasion), 12 October 1917 (gun shot wound, left foot), admitted to 69th Field Ambulance, then to 41st Casualty Clearing Station, and then (same day) to Ambulance Train No 18, and admitted to 2nd Australian General Hospital, Boulogne (foot amputated). Transferred to England, 17 October 1917, and admitted same day to Edmonton Military Hospital (amputated left foot: severe). Transferred to 3rd Auxiliaty Hospital, Dartford, 21 November 1917; to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 27 November 1917. Discharged on furlough, 27 December 1917, to report to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, 10 January 1918.
    Commenced return to Australia on board HS 'Wandilla', 16 March 1918; transhipped to HT 'Wiltshire departing Suez, 30 March 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 1 May 1918; discharged, 4 June 1918. AWMM
