  • Allotted to, and proceeded to 55th Bn from 5th Training Bn, Zeitoun, 16 February 1916; taken on strength of 55th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 16 February 1916.
    Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916.
    Posted missing, 20 July 1916.
    Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 26 July 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 20 July 1916'.
    Statement, Red Cross File No 1640147, 2654 Sergeant J. JEFFRIES, 55th Bn, 29 January 1917: 'His mate [2758] Geo. Bamford ... saw him killed. His head was blown off by a shell. Bamford also saw Lund's body put on the waggon to be buried. It would be buried at Sailly.'
    Second statement, 2565 Pte L.E. BEAVER, 55th Bn (patient, Hrborne House VAD Hospital, Birmingham, England), 28 April 1917: 'He was killed instantaneously, shot thrugh the neck at Fleurbaix on the 20th July 1916. I was wunded a fw days before but [4804 J.H.L.] "Harry Ellis" ... told me he was an eye-witness. Ellis was taking up ammunition from our front line to the enemies (sic) front line trench we had taken when he met "Lund" coming back, who fell dead in front of him, hit by a piece of shell. It ripped the disc off the body. Ellis picked up the disc and this is how he identified his man. He left the body in a shell hole.' AWMM
