'On the night of the 9th August 1918 when the enemy attacked our thinly held line North of ROSIERES and succeeded in making an entry into our trench through his old communication trench. Private BRAITHWAITE although inexperienced and the last man remaining on his gun immediately dashed forward to reinforce our position. Carrying unaided his gun spare parts, 8 panniers and a rifle he got his gun that he was undoubtedly instrumental in saving the position and by his great courage and fearless use of his weapon did much to encourage and cheer the small garrison.' - 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 109- 15/09/1919 AWMM
