  • Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 21 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916.
    Taken on strength, 5th Pioneer Bn, in the field, and allotted Regimental No 2867A, 25 August 1916.
    Admitted to 1st Anzac Corps Rest Station, 15 January 1917 (abrasions, feet); discharged to duty, 31 January 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 5 February 1917.

    Appointed Lance corporal, 1 March 1917.

    Found guilty, 11 April 1917, of (1) being absent without leave from 8 pm, 3 April, until 3 pm, 9 April 1917; (2) an act to the prejudiuce of good order and military discipline, abandoning kit: awarded forfeiture of Lance stripe, and forfeiture of a total of 7 days' pay.

    Admitted to 8th Field Ambulance, 6 July 1917 (scabies) and transferred same day to Corps Scabies Station; transferred to 9th Casualty Clearing Station,24 July 1917; discharged to duty, 21 June 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 24 August 1917.

    Found guilty, 29 September 1917, of being absent without leave from midnight, 26 September, to noon, 27 September 1917: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2.

    Wounded in action, 13 October 1917.
