      He indicates on his enlistment form that in NZ he did some training with the Naval Cadets.

      Completed a Degree in Architecture before moving to Australia to further his experience.

      At the time of the outbreak of war he was working in Orange NSW as a journalist.

      He enlisted in the AIF and was posted to the B Company 4th Infantry Battalion as a Private at a per diem rate of 5s per day.

      He embarked on 20 October 1914 in Sydney on HMAT Euripides A14 – destination Egypt and then Gallipoli.

      He landed on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and sprained an ankle badly enough to be removed to the Hospital in Alexandria but embarked on the Franconia and headed back on 14 May returning to duty 5 days later. He suffered a serious gunshot wound to the face and was evacuated again on the Franconia.
      Notice of his wounds must have reached his father because on 2 June he has telegraphed the Base Records Office AIEF in Melbourne seeking information and they replied on 21 June with very liitle information other than he was progressing.
      By 29 July he was fit enough to be back to the Dardanelles. Around the 6th of August he suffered another head wound from bullet splinters and was evacuated to Malta on the Itonius. On 29 August he was transferred to England on board HS Oxfordshire.
      He was promoted to Lieutenant on 22 March 1916 and transferred to the 5th Pioneer Battalion.

      His official next of kin is changed to his wife Marjorie c. 1916 With address c/- FW Beck Solicitor.

      He returned to Australia on the Orsova from England and removed from the Army rolls.
