  • Also served in New Zealand under Compulsory Military Training with 1 Nelson Marlborough & West Coast Regiment and 1 Wellington Regiment; Southern District Signals Troop, Addington Barracks; 1 Brigade (Main); Army Headquarters Communications Centre; 1 Communications Zone; 2 Communications Zone.

    Served in West Germany with Grenzschutzgruppe 9 (GSG 9), German Federal Police, on anti-terrorist operations.

    Total military service 26 years. 9 years in the New Zealand Army, 8 years in the Rhodesian Army, 3 years with the Omani Army and 3 years with Omani Special Forces.

    Captain Farmer married while in Rhodesia,

    Served in the RNZSigs, 1959-1968. Attached to 161 Battery RNZA as Sergeant drill instructor, 1965-1966. Deployed to Vietnam with the Battery in 1966 (with BSM Steve Parker) and seconded to the Australian 145 Signal Squadron and 110 Signal Squadron for nine months. Initially based at the 145 Sig Sqn Communication Centre in Cholon, Saigon; then later at the 110 Sig Sqn Communication Centre in Vung Tau. AWMM
