  • One of the original Heritage Members of the New Zealand Army Band.

'Pip played baritone in the 1NZ Regt Band led by Terry Moloney 1957-59. Pip also served as a Sgt with 161 Batt in SVN. Pip also served with the RNZEME Corps. On Sunday 16 February 1958 Terry’s little band of 12 players played their very first public engagement before a crowd of 10,000 as they accompanied the hymns at a Roman Catholic celebration of the Centenary of Lourdes, in Jalan Besar Stadium Singapore. Terry’s comment was, “Why were we asked to play? He suspected that the British bands were approached, but demanded too high a fee. The kiwi band did it for nothing!!! The band was at the Jungle Warfare School (JWS) in Kota Tinggi at the time working up their jungle craft, shooting and patrolling skills. Before they left for Singapore someone took a photo of the bandsmen before they mounted their truck. They look resplendent in starched and pressed jungle greens, white webbing, white anklets and spit polished boots. Pip is in the front row third in from the left. This historic photo is on the wall of the NZAB Bandroom at Burnham Camp. These 12 bandsmen and bandmaster Terry Moloney are the forerunners of today’s NZAB. As the band was packing up a priest thanked the band for their performance and slipped Terry some money which was enough for all of them to enjoy a few drinks and a meal at the Britannia Club before returning to Nyasa Camp, Kota Tinggi in Johor Bahru.'
