Served in the New Zealand Army from 1952 to 1982.
Trained as a Sioux light observation helicopter pilot in 3 Sqn RNZAF. Posted to Vietnam with 161 Bty and was then attached to Company A, 82nd Aviation Battalion, US Navy at Bien Hoa, November 1965-March 1966. Flew UH-1D Iroquois helicopters.
At the time, he was the only NZ Army pilot flying the Iroquois helicopters.
