    • PETERSEN HAROLD WILLIAM ROSEN 5 MARCH 1921 TO 22 APRIL 1984
      2/15/1016 2/23/21 NZD3512 NZ432544 30210

His file was unclear as to when his service actually commenced. Petersen stated in a letter outlining his service that he served in an AA Bty for 15 months prior to his attestation. His file indicates two regimental numbers: 2/15/1016 and 2/23/21. I believe 2/23/ to be the number associated with 22 AA Bty and 2/15/, to be the number associated with 10 Hvy Regt.

Petersen entered camp on 4 Sep 39 and was attested on 17 Oct 39. He transferred to 10 Hvy Regt on 3 Sep 40 and took his discharge from the Army on 27 Dec 40. On his attestation form dated Apr 48 he states the had 18 months’ TRF Service before joining the Navy!

He attested into the Navy on 9 Oct 41 and embarked for the UK in the ship Wairangi, bound for Liverpool via the Panama Canal, on 7 Nov 41 arriving in England on 11 Dec 41.

He trained in England with 776 Squadron at Lee-on-Solent and was commissioned as a S/Lt Observer on 6 Nov 42. He was promoted to Lt wef 6 Nov 44.

In Feb 44 he embarked in HMS Atheling as a member of 823 Squadron and sailed for India. The squadron was land-based at Katukurunda as part of 11 Torpedo, Bomber and Reconnaissance Wing. 823 sqn was disbanded in Jul 44 to allow for the expansion of 822 Sqn also based at Katukurunda; Petersen joined 822 Sqn. The sqn embarked in HMS Victorious and carried out a strike against a rail target at Sigli, Sumatra on 18 Sep 44. He continued with 822 Sqn until 45 when he returned to NZ for leave. Petersen rejoined the British Pacific Fleet in Australia in Jun 45 posted to 1770 Sqn. In Dec 45 he was discharged from the Navy and returned to NZ

He notes that he served in the carriers Activity, Atheling, and Victorious: Activity was used for deck landing training off the coast of England, Atheling transported 823 Sqn to India, and he flew operationally from Victorious. There was little in his file re his naval service.

Petersen was commissioned as a Lt in 2 NZEF in 47 and embarked for Japan as a member of the Second NZ Relief Draft in the Dunera on 15 Jul 47, he returned to NZ on 2 Feb 48. On 1 Apr 48, having been discharged from 2 NZEF, he attested into the Regular Force.

He arrived in Singapore to serve with 1 FIR on 7 Oct 53 and returned to NZ on 1 Jul 56. During the period he appears to have acted as OC HQ Coy and was awarded an m.i.d.

In Sep 57 he was posted to Korea as the NZ Mil LO and remained there until 18 Nov 59, when he returned to NZ.

On 27 Jun 65 he arrived in Saigon to serve as the DAA&QMG with HQ NZ V Force until Nov 66 when he returned to NZ. For his contribution to the HQ and his interaction with US, Vietnamese and Australian authorities in Vietnam, the Vietnamese Government recognized his contribution with the award of the Armed Forces Medal of Honour, First Class.

His discharge date from the Army was 6 March 1976.

His medal entitlement and what he has been authorized to wear will be different.

      For his WW2 service:
      1939-45 Star,
      Burma Star,
      Defence Medal,

There is no indication on his file that family members have applied for his medals. Public - John - Researcher - 24 September 2023 - Terry Brown extract of PF
