"To such good purpose has this officer led his Squadron in operations against the enemy in the Solomons, that his unit has destroyed 23 Japanese aircraft, probably destroyed several more, and damaged others, with the loss of only three pilots in combat. Squadron Leader Quill, immediately after destroying a Zero, was wounded in a fierce action near Munda on his first tour of operations last July [1943], and although weak through loss of blood, he reached an allied base and made a brilliant landing, wheels-up. He has since led his Squadron through two further tours. With the withdrawal of enemy aircraft to more northerly bases in recent months, he has both assisted in organising, and has personally led dive-bombing raids by Warhawks against Rabaul and its surroundings, and has been a highly successful pioneer in the use of fighter-bomber aircraft for fire-raising raids on enemy installations. In all these operations he has displayed courage and determination. Squadron Leader Quill led his unit on 76 missions, covering almost the entire Solomons campaign, and by his personal example, quiet enthusiasm and active interest in all the personnel under his command, built up a Squadron that earned a particularly high reputation in the estimation of both New Zealand and Allied Commands." Hanson, p. 403-4 AWMM

Quill also recieved a United States Commendation; “The Commander Aircraft, Northern Solomons, takes pleasure in commending WING COMMANDER STANLEY GILBERT QUILL, ROYAL NEW ZEALAND AIR FORCE for services as set forth in the following CITATION: For skilful and effective performance of duty while serving as Assistant Operations Officer on the staff of Commander Aircraft Northern Solomons from November 1944 to 11 March 1945. Wing Commander Quill in this position used his broad knowledge and tactical experience to help in the origin and supervision of aerial strikes against the enemy in the Northern Solomons Area. His knowledge of air operations and his invaluable advice and suggestions were largely responsible for the excellent co-ordination and efficient operations of units under this command. The neutralisation of enemy air activity, the large destruction of enemy personnel and material and the excellent co-ordination with the Australian Army ground operations was a reflection on the precise planning and effective tactics originated by the Operations Section of the Commander Aircraft Northern Solomons. Wing Commander Quill at all times performed his duties with a degree of skill, energy, and enthusiasm in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.” [Sgd] R J Mitchell, Major General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commander Aircraft, Northern Solomons."
