  • George was a classmate at school in 1963. He was killed in a road accident about 4 miles west of Opotiki while home on leave from the Vietnam. I saw him on the Friday night before he died and on the Saturday morning found the accident and with the ambulance still at the scene. George was leaving Opotiki in the early hours that morning to pick up his brother in Auckland and in the fog had driven on the right hand side of the road for about six miles before hitting a truck head on. He had been seen in Bridge street by the milkman driving the street on the wrong side. In Vietnam they drive on the right. The truck driver said that he was on the wrong side too and made no effort to change to hiis proper lane on the state highway.I of course attended his funeral. He is buried in the RSA section of the Opotiki cemetery. George was a good friend and a big personal loss for me.
