  • Served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force from 1st February 1952 until 29th March 1990. Deputy Chief of Defence Staff, October 1988 to December 1989. Commanding Officer of 42 Squadron RNZAD (Dakota/Devon) November 1970 - Jun 1972. Commanding Officer of 40 Squadron RNZAF (Hercules) Jan 1974-Jul 1976.

    Also awarded Sword of Honour at RAF Cranwell in 1958. His brother Russell Bennett Thomson also won the Sword in 1962. They are believed to be the only brothers to have won the Sword.

    Retired as Air Vice Marshall, QCVSA, CBE, OBE, AFC. AWMM
