He drowned when HMTS Aparima - a 5704 tons British Merchant vessel - was hit on 19 November 1917 by a torpedo from a submarine 6 miles S.W. from Anvil Point. (Anvil Point is on the south coast of England between Bournemouth and Weymouth.) The Aparima was armed for defensive purposes and the crew had no warning that they were being attacked. 56 lives were lost. (Source : nzhistory.net)
