  • Son of the late Samuel George and Elizabeth Daniel; husband of Alice Maud Daniel, of Brigerton House, 196 Hammell St., Wickham, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Born at [sic] Kiataumara , New Zealand. Source: Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

    Walter was one of 17 cadets from New Zealand who lost their lives on the 19 November 1917. (Source: nzhistory.net)

    He drowned when HMTS Aparima - a 5704 tons British Merchant vessel - was hit on 19 November 1917 by a torpedo from a submarine 6 miles S.W. from Anvil Point. (Anvil Point is on the south coast of England between Bournemouth and Weymouth.) The Aparima was armed for defensive purposes and the crew had no warning that they were being attacked. 56 lives were lost. Source: NZ History. AWMM
