      18 October 1945 AWMM
'On 13 April 1945 Gunner Anderson was radio operator to a forward observation officer supporting 22 Battalion of 9 NZ Infantry Brigade at the commencement of the assault on the enemy-held positions on the SILLARO RIVER, Italy. The assault was strongly opposed and for the period 13-15 April the Company with which the forward observation party was operating was continually subjected to heavy shelling and mortaring which caused numerous casualties in the area. Throughout this period, 72 hours in all, Gunner Anderson maintained continuous radio communication both with his Regiment and with Battalion Headquarters and was often able to assist the Company Commander by the passage back of important information when Company to Battalion communications cable and radio failed as a result of enemy action or atmospheric conditions. Throughout the whole action Gunner Anderson operated his set in an open troop carrier. His coolness under fire and complete disregard for personal safety were outstanding. Over an exhausting period of action his devotion to duty was responsible for the quick response by the guns to all calls for fire and on the night of 14-15 April the defensive fire ordered by this observation post resulted in the breaking up of a strong enemy counter-attack on the Battalion.'. 'Another 4th Field decoration earned in this period was that of Gunner Anderson of 25 Battery. He was a wireless operator in an OP also in support of 22 Battalion. For three days he worked his set in an open troop-carrier, passing not only fire orders but messages for the infantry when their own communications failed. Most of this time he was under shell and mortar fire. Anderson gained an immediate MM.' (Source: Murphy, W.E. 2nd NZ Divisional Artillery. p. 713.) AWMM
