      4 November 1941 AWMM
'On the evening of 17 April 1941 6 NZ Field Regiment was withdrawing under cover of fog from a position in the SERVIA. PASS, Greece. After A Troop had succeeded in withdrawing one gun the fog lifted temporarily and exposed to the enemy’s view the second gun as it was vacating the position. The enemy immediately opened a heavy bombardment on the troop position and orders were given that no further evacuation was to take place until the hostile shelling ceased. Information was then received at Headquarters that the two remaining guns were out of the pits and were in imminent danger of being destroyed, whereupon the Commanding Officer ordered that these guns be brought out immediately. The tractor drivers, one of whom was Gunner Bunton, were given their orders and dashed on to the position. With great skill and coolness they manoeuvred their tractors under heavy fire and succeeded in bringing both the guns and their detachments out safely.'. (Source: The National Archives. • Gunner R. W. Bunton, MM; Ashburton; born Tasmania, 9 Aug 1916; tractor driver; wounded 23 Nov 1942. (Source: McClymont, W.G. To Greece. p.282.)

'The guns of 7 Medium Regiment were out by 5 p.m. E Troop 6 Field Regiment had also reached the highway, but it had taken three tractors and a team of men to move each gun across the rain-soaked slopes. The others were being brought out with less difficulty when the mist lifted and left the two guns of A Troop out of the pits and in full view of the enemy. The shellfire which soon came over was heavy but two drivers, Gunners Bunton and Tombleson, resolutely went in with their quads and retrieved them. That done, all guns, including those of 31 Battery 7 Anti- Tank Regiment, were on the main highway and soon rattling south towards Larisa and Thermopylae. Gunner R. W. Bunton, MM; Staveley; born Tasmania, 9 Aug 1916; tractor driver; wounded 23 Nov 1942.; 2nd Divisional Artillery - Then the sky cleared with dramatic suddenness, fully exposing the two guns to the enemy observers. Gun fire was concentrated on them and they were in imminent danger of destruction. Two drivers, Gunners Tombleson and Bunton, took their quads over the ridge, with shells splashing around them, and ‘with great skill and coolness manoeuvred their tractors under heavy fire … and succeeded in bringing both guns and detachments out safely’.'
