'Staff Sergeant Burley was senior NCO in the Field Ambulance Company establishing the forward advanced dressing station in the operations towards the ORSOGNA-ORTONA Road, Italy, between 14-25 December 1943. Owing to the difficult and close nature of the country and the determined enemy resistance only a small resuscitating point could be established for the attacks of 15 December and 24 December and evacuation of regimental aid posts was by hand carriage over steep, exposed and very muddy routes under enemy fire. Staff Sergeant Burley was forward of the skeleton advanced dressing station assisting and directing the stretcher-bearing. On all occasions his coolness, decision and example were an inspiration to those working under him and to the wounded they were carrying. He was always an example to his men both in his personal bearing and in his care end skill in tending the wounded. Throughout his service he displayed courage, zeal and ability well above that regarded as ordinary duty.'. (Source: The National Archives. Recommendation for Award for Burley, Harold William. (Ref.
