    Military Medal (MM) AWMM
    3 August 1944 AWMM
'On the night of 22-23 March 1944 Private Callanan was in a fighting position in a house at CASSINO, Italy. The house was hit by several shells and two of the seriously wounded could not be removed owing to the almost continuous shell and mortar fire. Private Callanan remained with the two injured men for five hours and then volunteered to carry a message for assistance across 400 yards of cratered ground without tracks, under fire and in pitch darkness. Two previous parties had gone out and had not returned. Private Callanan was successful and on his return he again volunteered as a stretcher-bearer. His coolness, courage and initiative throughout this difficult period set an example to all.'. (Source: The National Archives. Recommendation for Award for Callanan, Andrew John. (Ref. WO 373/7/132). Military Medal. AWMM
