      6 April 1944 AWMM
'On the night of 14-15 December 1943 during the attack on the road between POGGIA FLORITA and ORSOGNA, Italy, Private Campbell was a Signaller attached one of the forward companies. Throughout the attack he maintained wireless communication with Battalion Headquarters and was always in position when required by his Company Commander. Before it was possible to dig in after reaching the Company’s objective and in spite of very heavy enemy shell and mortar fire, Private Campbell continued to send and receive messages with almost complete-disregard for his personal safety. During the counter-attacks he manned a machine gun in the forward defence localities and throughout two very difficult days displayed the greatest coolness and bravery both as a signaller and an infantryman. His devotion to duty and maintenance of the sole means of calling up artillery support undoubtedly contributed to the breaking-up of the enemy counter-attacks.'. (Source: The National Archives. Recommendation for Award for Campbell, Colin Munro. (Ref. WO 373/5/460). Military Medal. AWMM
