    Military Medal (MM) AWMM
    21 December 1944 AWMM
'During the battle for CASSINO, Italy, in March 1944 Corporal Chapman was in charge of the line detachment at Headquarters, 6 NZ Infantry Brigade. At this time the Brigade forward lines were under constant and heavy shell-fire, particularly in the vicinity of the barracks to the north of Cassino, with the result that constant work was necessary to keep line communications through the area. Corporal Chapman set a splendid example to his men by going out himself whenever the shelling was heaviest. His cheerfulness, courage and determination over the whole period and his complete disregard for personal danger were an example and inspiration to those with whom he came in contact.'.
