'Driver Childerhouse drove a truck throughout the operations in CRETE and devoted himself to the evacuation of wounded from the Main Dressing station at Modion. To reach this village he had to drive along an exposed road and on each occasion had to pass a cross-road which was completely under the fire of enemy troops. The fact that the dressing station was evacuated was largely due to his courage and devotion. Later in the withdrawal he worked day after day driving wounded to Sphakia beach and when his petrol supplies failed he continued to assist walking wounded.'. (Source: The National Archives.
