      'On 18 October 1944 during the advance to the SCOLA RIGOSSO, Italy, the immediate objective of the platoon in which Lance Corporal Cochrane was a section leader was an enemy-occupied building. While advancing under heavy enemy mortar and shell fire, as well as small-arms fire from the building, the platoon came under intense machine-gun fire from an enemy post on the flank. The Platoon Commander was killed and some confusion caused. On his own initiative and regardless of his personal safety Lance Corporal Cochrane immediately attacked the machine-gun post, killing two of the enemy and taking a third prisoner. He then rallied the men of the platoon and led them in the assault on the building, inflicting casualties on the enemy and taking 17 prisoners. His coolness, initiative and personal courage were an inspiration to the platoon and were largely responsible for the success of the attack and the light casualties suffered.'.
