      The National Archives. Recommendation for Award for Hawkins, Clifford William. (Ref. WO 373/5/429). Military Cross. "On the 15 December 1943 Lt. Hawkins was ordered to exploit along the road to Orsogna with his troop as point toop. He place his own tank as point tank of his troop and preceded under heavy shell fire to Point 240028 where he came under fire from a hidden enemy anti-tank gun at very short range. A shell pentrated the right hand side of his tank which immediately burst into flames. He ordered his crew to dismount and himself got down on the ground. He then observed his gunner endeavouring to get out and he got up again to assit him but as he was helping him another shell penetrated the turret near where he was standing and killed the gunner. The flames were very strong by this time and he was force away. He then went around to endeavour to rescue the driver and spare driver but the flames were shooting up from there so that his efforts were of no avail. All this time he was under considerable high explosive fire and intermittent machine-gun fire. He was finally forced to abandon his efforts and although badly singed and slight wounded in the face managed to regain our forward defensive localities by a circutious route. He also proved himself very steadfast in his duties on operations on 1-5 December 1943 in the neighbourhood of Guardiagrele and particularly on 3 December 1943 when he led his troop under very jeavy shell fire in support of the infantry into the outskirts of the village of Melone. The manner in which he commanded his troop did much to relieve our infantry particularly in the manner in which he drew the enemy shell and mortar fire on to himselv and thus away from the infantry. His general conduct throughout the entire recent operations has been of the highest order and he has been unsparing of himself in the furtherance of Duty." Gallant Acts and Noble Deeds, p. 132 AWMM
