The National Archives. Recommendation for Award for Pickmere, Ralph Arnold. (Ref. WO 373/25/96). Military Cross. "Lt. Pickmere has led mine-clearing parties with outstanding gallantry. By his grim determination, disregard of personal safety and devotion to duty he has been an inspiration to his men and on every occasion he has completed his gaps in the minefields in good time for the passage of the armour and support weapons. His work on clearing minefields was particularly outstanding during the attack in the gap south of El Hamma on the night 21/22 March 1943. Lt. Pickmere was in charge of a lane clearing party through a deep minefield laid and thoroughly concealed in tall Barley, and containing numerous 'S' mines. He displayed courage and resourcefulness in making dangerous reconnaissance and removing booby-traps well forward of his men while all the time being subjected to cross machine-gun fire. His organising ability under difficult circumstances and his example and inspiring leadership contributed in no small measure to the success of the operation." Pomeroy and Beattie, p.241 AWMM
