    Staples-Browne and his wife Margaret (Makereti Papakura) opened up their Oxfordshire home and private London suite to New Zealand servicemen during WWI.

    Papakura was a well-respected anthropologist and ethonographer.

    War service: enlisted in London, 5 July 1916.
    Appointed Captain, on strength of NZ Military Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, and on strength of NZ Command Depot, 19 June 1916.
    Appointed Member of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) 'for valuable services rendered'.
    Discharged in London, 28 June 1919.
