Citation for DCM: During the battle for Cassino, Italy, in March 1944 Lance Sergeant Davis displayed determination, courage and outstanding leadership in completing several difficult and dangerous engineering operations. On 16 March 1944 he made a reconnaissance for a tank route through enemy- occupied parts of the time. Although he was persistently sniped at and his runner killed he carried on and brought back very valuable information. During the night of 22-23 March 1944 his platoon was engaged in replacing an assault bridge on Highway 6, Cassino, which had been knocked out by enemy shelling. Heavy mortaring caused many casualties of whom were the Field Company Commander and the Platoon Officer. The mortaring increased in intensity, driving the men from the site. Lance Sergeant Davis realised the importance of opening this main communication and by his splendid example and inspiring leadership he soon had the party reorganised and back at work. In spite of heavy and accurate fire, he held his men togetherand calmly went about giving assistance and directions until the bridge was completed and the route opened to tanks. Throughout the operations in Cassino, Lance Sergeant Davis undertook the most hazardous engineer tasks. His steadiness and devotion to duty were an example to his men. AWMM
