  • He served in WWII as part of the 26th Battalion (Otago) in campaigns in Greece and Crete, before being captured at Sidi Rezegh on November 30 1941. He was then a POW in two Italian camps -- first Campo 57 in Udine and then Campo 148 outside Verona, where he was POW camp commander, as the highest ranking NCO. After the Italian Armistice, he was sent to Stalag VIIb at Lamsdorf, where he stayed until the prisoners were forced-marched across Poland in the last months of WWII.

  • Thanks for everything you sacrificed so we can live freely today. We have spent the day talking about what you did with the girls asking lots of questions about what you were like as a Grandad. I got to tell them about your amazing sense of humour, teaching us all about how to garden and staying with you on the school holidays. Finding more info about your service in the war through Cathy has been amazing as I know you didn’t talk about a lot of things that happened, which is pretty understandable. Love you xx say hi to Mum, Nana and Uncle Graeme x

  • I laid a poppy for you today
    For service, given willingly.
For sacrifice, given with courage under fire and pain.

    For the suffering too.
    The burden that you bore.
    The cruelty of others.
    Man's inhumanity to man.

You were my Grandad and I remember you for that. For the good, kind, clever, gentle and mischievous man that you were.
But every ANZAC day we take a moment to remember your courage.
And we are proud of you Grandad.
