  • This record was compiled with information from the serviceman

A normal RNZN officer entry of the period, with training in the Royal Navy ashore and at sea for four and a half years then returning home for sea service to complete qualification for Lieutenant's rank. After three years in two ships, and a short period at HMNZS IRIRANGI went to the UK for a course in aircraft direction and 2 years exchange service which included time in HMS ARK ROYAL which flew the (then) latest jet fighters. On return spent time in Naval Staff before going to the Defence Staff in Singapore for two years, followed by time in WAIKATO , then OTAGO. This was followed by over two years in Glasgow as the Project Officer for the construction of HMNZS CANTERBURY. Returned to the Defence Ministry in Officer postings before returning to sea in command of HMNZS WAIKATO. This was followed by a period in the Naval Staff then to Auckland as Chief of Staff before going to London in the Defence Liaison Staff. Became Head of the staff after a year and was also Defence Attache to West Germany when that appointment was created. Last appointment was as C O HMNZS PHILOMEL and on retirement was promoted Commodore, the rank I held in London.
Married in 1958, had three children born in different countries owing to our travels. The oldest, a son, was born in Malta, joined the RN Fleet Air Arm when we were in London and served in the Falklands war. He transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in 1988 and retired from the service in 2009. The next, a daughter born in England, served in the London University Territorial Artillery for a time while attending university. All three married English people so the grandchildren have dual citizenship. (Source:Serviceman) AWMM
