  • William Alan Soppet is known to all as 'Bill'. He is my father. I am holding a copy of his army file.
He married my mum, Catherine Harrison 31 January 1945.
He was a very hard working person who dedicated his life to his family, church and St John Ambulance. I recall many occasions when, night or day, he would stop whatever he was doing to get the ambulance and convey a sick or injured person to the Opotiki Hospital. He also took part in the training of ST John Ambulance Cadets.
He did not speak much of his army service, other than it was hot and difficult working at the ordnance depot in New Caledonia.
From 1945 he worked many long hard hours in his saddlery business, W.A. Soppet Ltd. He had a great many happy customers. I recall him making horse saddles from scratch and they were very sought after for his workmanship was excellent. Public - John - Child - 31 July 2017 - Family oral history / personal knowledge
