    • He was a member of the 'Goldfish Club".

Date and time of ditching, 28/29 July 1942, 0330hrs, Zuider Zee, Netherlands. The cause of the incident was due to night fighter attack. Time spent in water 2 1/2 - 3 hours in Mae West. AWMM
    • Crew members perished when Bomber Command dispatched 256 aircraft 29 July 1942 to bomb Hamburg that night. Because of heavy cloud and bad weather en route to and from the target, only around 70 managed to find and bomb the target with any certainty that they were actually bombing Hamburg. Losses were heavy (39 aircraft) because of the effective German anti-aircraft and night-fighter defences. 75 Squadron’s contribution to the raid consisted of 17 Vickers Wellington Mk III medium bombers from its base at Feltwell. BJ661 was shot down by a night fighter at around 0300hrs on its return journey to Feltwell (about 5 hours into the mission) and crashed into the Ijsselmeer in the Netherlands. Three of the crew died, but two were captured and became Prisoners of War. SGT Callaghan was captured.
