  • Mervyn Blackford was born on the 30th of June 1917 to Horace and Elsie Blackford. Before enlistment he was working as a Farm Assistant to his father in Te Aroha.

    On the 22nd of November 1940 he enlisted in Paeroa and selected his preferred military corps as the Mounted Rifles. He completed his basic training and was posted to the 1st Battalion of the Army Tank Brigade stationed in Waiouru to learn about armoured warfare.

    In May 1943 he embarked for overseas from Wellington with the 9th Reinforcements on the troop ship 'Dominion Monarch'. In June he disembarked in Egypt and was taken on strength with the 18th Armoured Regiment.

    The 18th Armoured Regiment arrived in Taranto, Italy on the 18th of October 1943 and he fought with the Regiment through the entire Italian Campaign till the end of the war in 1945.

    He arrived back in Wellington, New Zealand on the 13th of January 1946 and was discharged from the Army on the 29th of March 1946. Public - Clint - Other relative - 25 August 2016 - Military Personnel Records.
