Acting Flight Lieutenant Frame has completed 52 sorties, which have included numerous successful shipping reconnaissances. Last October, he enabled his formation to make a successful attack on a convoy of merchant vessels and their escorts. On a flight in February, of this year [1943] he located four seperate convoys, and, in the face of fierce opposition from escorting destroyers, shadowed the convoys whiich were later attacked by forty aircraft. Last month [April], on a shipping search in the Trapani/Palermo area, he located a convoy of four merchant ships excoted by 6 destroyers and five other vessels. Despite heavy fire from the convoy, Flight Lieutenant Frame shadowed it and reported its position, and the ships were successfully attacked. Flight Lieutenant Frame has shown great skill and courage, and he has performed valuable service. (Hanson, p. 194) AWMM

  • Served with No 221 Squadron RAF. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Malta [George Cross] Fiftieth Anniversary Medal. Member of the 'Goldfish Club' and the 'Late Arrivals Club'. Source: Hanson, By Such Deeds, p.194

Flying Officer James Stewart Frame, is a member of both the Goldfish Club and the Late Arrivals Club. Frame was serving with the 221 Squadron attached to the Royal Air Force. He was participating in a search for an enemy convoy off the the coast of western Crete. Whilst they were searching, the port motor engine failed, abruptly stopping at 1000 feet, near the coast of Al Elamain. They turned towards their base at Ginaclia aerodome in Egypt, about two minutes later they suffered engine failed and belly-flopped into the ocean. All six members of the crew, were able to get into the aircraft's dinghy. The crew fired their one and only distress signal, and a Royal Navy motor launch on patrol in enemy territory in Matruh sighted their distress and came to investigate. The RN fortunately rescued the crew and took them to Alexandria, arriving three days after ditching (The Goldfish Club & Hanson, p. 194). AWMM
